CHI-WEB FAQ

Sections of questions and answers on this page:

We've included clickable links for most listserv operations. These should create an appropriate email for you to send using your email client. If these do not work for you, please let us know at chi-web-request@acm.org. Note that the contents of the subject lines are ignored by listserv software, so they be left blank.

Questions about joining the list and settings

Answers (see forgotten or changed email addresses where necessary)

How do I join the list, subscribe, add myself, etc?

The quickest way is to send an email to chi-web-subscribe-request@listserv.acm.org.

Your email address and name will be taken from the FROM line of the email, so send it from the address you want subscribe.

Unfortunately this approach does not always work, depending on the format of the sender's email address. If you receive an error message or prefer a more reliable solution, send the following line as the message body to LISTSERV@ACM.ORG:

subscribe chi-web YourName

For example, "subscribe chi-web Leo DaVinci". (If you use the link above, don't forget to change YourName.)

If all else fails, send your email address and name in any format to chi-web-request@acm.org.

How do I exit the list, quit, unsubscribe, etc?

Send an email to chi-web-unsubscribe-request@listserv.acm.org.

Your email address will be taken from the FROM line of the email, so send it from the address that is subscribed.

How do I get it in digest mode (a daily summary of each day's postings)?

Send an email to LISTSERV@ACM.ORG with this in the body:

Your email address will be taken from the FROM line of the email, so send it from the address that is subscribed.

How do I turn off digest mode?

Send email to LISTSERV@ACM.ORG with this in the body:

Your email address will be taken from the FROM line of the email, so send it from the address that is subscribed.

How do I change email addresses for the list?

Send email to LISTSERV@ACM.ORG from your old address with this in the body:

(If you use the link above, don't forget to change NewAddress to your new email address!)

Forgotten or changed email addresses

All of the instructions above require you to have access to your old email account. If this is not the case for any reason, please send a note to chi-web-request@acm.org and tell us what you need done. The list administrators will do it for you. Include your existing CHI-WEB email address or your best guess.

Questions about contributing to the list

Answers

How do I contribute to the list?

Send email to CHI-WEB@ACM.ORG. Your submission will go to the moderators who may approve it. New members should "listen in" on the list for a while and check the archives before asking a question. Everyone should be familiar with the CHI-WEB Guidelines.

Note that since CHI-WEB is moderated, you can contribute from any email address - not just the one that is subscribed.

Why do replies go to the sender by default (instead of the list)? We had a vote and more people wanted it that way. In general, it is safer to have replies go to the sender: fewer accidental and embarrasing messages go to the list.

Vacations, holidays and other breaks

Answers

What do I need to do if I take a vacation, holiday or other break?

There are several options:

  1. Do nothing. You will continue to receive CHI-WEB postings in the normal way. However, you must not use an out-of-office reply facility since replies may be sent to every contributor to the list.
  2. Change your subscription so that you receive daily digests instead of individual postings. This will reduce the number of emails you receive while away. Out-of-office replies go to the listserver instead of contributors and are ignored. Instruction for doing this are above.
  3. Change your subscription so that you receive no mail from CHI-WEB. This is slightly simpler than unsubscribing and resubscribing:

Send email to LISTSERV@ACM.ORG with this in the body:

(Your email address will be taken from the FROM line of the email, so send it from the address that is subscribed.)

This will stop CHI-WEB email for you, but leave you subscribed. When you get back, use

to start getting CHI-WEB email again.

I just got back from vacation. Why was I switched to digest mode while I was gone? If your vacation message does indeed go out to CHI-WEB contributors, we will change you into digest mode (one message per day instead of each email as it is approved). This will stop the auto-replies to CHI-WEB senders, while letting you catch up with the list when you get back. You will get instructions on how to switch back, or see elsewhere on this FAQ page.

Troubleshooting email problems

Answers

How do I send plain text?

For most email clients it is a simple matter of setting the mail format for the current message to "plain text". Detailed instructions for most email clients can be found at http://www.expita.com/nomime.html (this page is maintained by Gerald Boyd).

Feel free to send test messages if you are not sure that your plain text settings are working. Use the chi-web-request address if possible, but submissions to the list will also work (they will be filtered out by the moderator).

I've tried everything but still can't send plain text.

The chances are that your organization is using Microsoft Exchange Server and has disabled the selection of message format by individual users.

To tell if your email is passing through Exchange Server, open an incoming email and examine the Internet header (View->Options menu item in Outlook). If "Microsoft Mail Internet Headers" or "Microsoft Internet Mail Service" appears in the first few lines, than Exchange Server is implicated. Ask your network support desk to check the following:

For Exchange Server 5.x look in the Exchange Administrator program under the Internet Mail Service Properties->Internet Mail->Advanced Options. The "Send Microsoft Exchange rich text formatting" field should be set either to "User" or "Never". If it is set to "User", individual email client formatting options will determine whether messages are sent in plain text or rich text (this is the recommended setting).

Under Exchange Server 2000 it is the same setting, but its location is different. Use the Exchange System Manager to locate "Internet Message Formats" under "Global Settings". Double-click on the Profile for the appropriate domain (usually the default profile). Click the "Advanced" tab. The "Exchange rich-text format fields" should have either "Never use" or "Determined by user settings" selected. Also, under the Message Format tab make sure that the message encoding fields have "Provide message body as plain text" selected.

Messages don't look the same when posted as they did when I sent them.

Several issues conspire to spoil the layout of plain text messages. Here are some tips:

- Use a fixed-space font (e.g. Courier New under Windows) when you are composing messages. Most email clients display plain text messages with a similar font.

- Disable line-wrapping if possible. Don't use "hard" carriage returned except between paragraphs and where short lines are needed.

- Avoid using special characters. These may be translated differently by email clients.

- Avoid using the tab key. Tabs can be interpretated differently by email clients. Use multiple spaces instead (this tip provided by Maya Retzlaff).

Other questions about the list

Answers

Can I see a list of members? No. Our list of members is protected.
Can I use email addresses from list postings for any other purpose? No. An email address used in a CHI-WEB posting must only be used for replies directly relvant to that posting, within a reasonable period of time (a week or two in most cases).
Who owns the list? ACM provides the technical support and SIGCHI provides the policy-level guidance. If you have comments or questions about CHI lists at ACM.ORG in general, contact Hans De Graaf, Vice Chair for Operations, chi-VC-Operations@acm.org.
Why must all postings be in plain text? Plain text is the only format accepted by all email clients. It also allows us to guarantee that postings are virus-free.
Many lists I contribute to don't care about including earlier postings ("blind quoting" or "automatic requoting"). Why is it a problem for CHI-WEB. Many CHI-WEB subscribers receive daily digests rather than individual postings. The digests become quite large if earlier emails are repeated in replies. Also, CHI-WEB is fortunate in having extensive archives. If a reply does not include enough information to make its context clear, the original posting can easily be located.
