A Video Paper provides the opportunity to submit the same high-quality, rigorously-refereed material associated with traditional textual papers, but using the dynamic medium of video. Authors may submit video papers on the same topics as traditional papers. This submission category provides a unique opportunity for many new kinds of submissions. For example, processes and techniques can be shown directly. Empirical studies can show how the experiment was really run. Long-term studies can show how people change their usage patterns over time. Descriptions of systems can show how users solve problems. Video papers will be published in the CHI 99 Video Proceedings, which will be distributed to all conference attendees and available for purchase from ACM after the conference. They are accompanied by a four-page textual paper in the CHI 99 Conference Proceedings. Thus, video papers provide the same exposure and long-term access as traditional textual papers. Review CriteriaVideo paper submissions will be reviewed using the same review criteria as Papers, except that the "Presentation Quality" criteria for video papers are as follows. Production Quality: The image quality of the screen and other shots including all text must be excellent. Audio must be very understandable. Generally, we are aiming for what can reasonably be expected from a competent amateur video producer. Structure Quality: The flow of the video should allow the viewer to understand the flow of the content. Intelligibility: The information must be understandable in the way it is presented. Appropriateness: Video should be the most appropriate medium for this material. FormatA Video Paper submission includes both a video paper and an accompanying four-page textual paper. The video paper and the accompanying textual paper should be designed as complementary but separate presentations that can be viewed or read independently of each other.Video PaperPrepare a video paper, from 2 to 8 minutes in length. Submissions longer than 8 minutes will not be considered. We will accept NTSC and PAL formats. Please contact the Video Papers Chair if you need to submit in a different format. Some clarity of detail is lost when the conference duplicates the video. Therefore, please pay close attention to legibility of text and visibility of detail. (Please note that if your video is accepted, you are expected to submit your final video in a higher-quality format such as Beta-SP or U-Matic, if possible.) Textual PaperPrepare a four-page textual paper in the CHI Conference Publications Format. It should contain detailed information that is inconvenient to express on video. It must include title, author information, abstract, keywords, body, and references. Blind ReviewTo support the blind review process, the review copies of the video must not contain affiliations, author information, or acknowledgments. If accepted, your final version should contain this information. PermissionsThere are specific laws and regulations related to use of third-party media elements in video. It is the responsibility of the authors of a Video Paper to secure and pay for appropriate rights to music, photographs, video clips, and other media elements that are used in their video papers. If any third-party media are used in a video paper, certification that rights have been secured must be submitted with the final camera-ready copy for any accepted video papers. Because of the inherent difficulties in securing and documenting these rights, we strongly discourage Video Paper submitters from using third-party media. AssistanceBe sure to read our "Guide for Successful Video Submissions". In addition, authors are strongly encouraged to contact the Video Papers Chair before submission in order to receive help making their submission appropriate for this new category. Upon AcceptanceAuthors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by mid-November 1998. The primary author of each accepted Video Paper will receive an Author Kit with release forms giving ACM permission to sell the entire video after the conference and detailed instructions on how to submit the camera-ready video and paper materials for publication. These materials are due by 8 January 1999. If your submission is accepted, it will not be published without copyright release forms signed by the first-listed author or a representative of the first author's institution. At the ConferenceAuthors of accepted video papers will present their work at the conference in a technical session.Submissions
